The film ‘MARE NOSTRUM – A Concert. A Journey.’ by Stefan Haupt and Michelle Brun is the culmination of several years of educational work by the Scuola Vivante in a team of educators, students, parents, alumni, course leaders, project staff, musicians and filmmakers. The following two pages provide an insight into how this film came about and show how it is possible to take ideas and impulses from children and young people and develop them into a continuously expanding project.

Utopia – Greek οὐ, “not”, and tópos, “place”
A utopia is the idea of something that did not yet find its place in the real world. It is a thought that can become reality; one that must become reality so that the world – the real world or your own individual one – can become a better place.
Life is constantly changing. Human beings are blessed with the ability to shape this change.
As we continuously strive to change and develop ourselves throughout our lives, the capacity for utopian thought is a basic skill that human beings possess, that we have been given, but also one that allows us to take action, one that we have to be encouraged and empowered to use.
This is why pedagogical and cultural work always contains an element of liberation – liberation and encouragement of utopian thinking so that new ideas and new places can become reality.
